Designing and Making Simple Tactile Books
for Children with a Visual Impairment
August 16-17 2007
Under the supervision of Marion Ripley, Clearvision and Annica Norberg Swedish Library of Talking Books and Braille
Sponsored by FORCE Foundation.
Simple tactile books are invaluable in introducing new concepts, new vocabulary and new skills to young children with little or no sight. They can play a similar role for older children with learning difficulties. Tactile books are also enjoyable and encourage children to develop a love of books and literacy. This workshop will explore the following aspects of tactile book design and production:
- The need for tactile books.
- Designing tactile illustrations so that children can make sense of them
- Different methods of making tactile illustrations
- Making multiple copies of tactile illustrations
- The transition from real objects to more representational illustrations
- Good topics for tactile books
- Tactile illustrations for mainstream picture books
- Training volunteers to make tactile books
The workshop will include practical and creative activities to increase participants' confidence in designing and making tactile books. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences of making and using tactile books but the workshop will also cater for those with no previous knowledge of the subject - and for those who do not consider themselves to be artistic or creative.
